The Oorja Files

The Oorja Files is a series of archived conversations. In the first part of this series, we talk to Oorja CEO, Sh. Rajiv Madhok. During the course of a “roadtrip” (one of many) to the Bharti office in Gurgaon, we touch upon a variety of different topics including what it means to be successful, the progress that’s happening in India, comparisons between the Indian model and the Chinese model, the difference between North India and South India, the impact of reservations on the private sector, and the relationship between VAS providers and the operators. Sh. Rajiv Madhok offers some unique and interesting insights into his philosophy, his religion and his thoughts about the telecom boom in India. The motivation for “The Oorja Files” came out of the fact that although it was easy to access whitepapers and datasheets from companies about their products, it was not always easy to have an intellectual one-on-one with a CEO and interact with him on a personal level. This video, titled “Conversations with Rajiv Madhok” is the first part in a series titled “The Oorja Files” and future editions will feature interviews with other remarkable people.

The Principle of Manifesting Awesomeness

Over the course of the past so many months, I have had the opportunity of interacting with a lot of amazingly clever and talented colleagues. All of them have been domain experts with sound knowledge and amazing skills. Interacting with them has only reinforced my belief in the fundamental awesomeness of human beings. It is my sincere belief that all human beings are fundamentally awesome but sometimes it takes a certain environment and a certain nurturing for that fundamental awesomeness to really shine through. What would be awesome for any company that’s growing at the rate at which we’re growing, is if we could identify what those conditions are, where talent and intelligence can be nurtured, and for those conditions to be replicated in every team, every group and every department. That would make things, truly, (for want of a better word), awesome. The problem statement here is - how do we take things that are awesome and make them doubly, and triply awesome? The answer lies in finding out what is holding someone back from doing things in a doubly and triply awesome way. What is holding us back from doubling, even tripling our personal productivity and therefore our personal contribution to the company’s growth. I think the answer lies in looking inwards and asking ourselves these questions. How can I make myself even more productive and therefore, even more useful to the company? Is there something that I am doing, that I can do better. How can I manifest my awesomeness and manifest it even better than everyone else. How can I inspire everyone else to manifest their awesomeness? The answers to these questions are different for each one of us. But if we are able to find the answers to these questions, we can be better individuals, better programmers, better managers, and even better super-heroes than we already are. Sometimes the problem is not that we don’t care enough. Sometimes the problem is that we care too much. And it’s precisely because we care too much that we want to manifest our inherent awesomeness. This blog post is dedicated to that shall-not-be-named entity who cared enough to let me know that he cares too much. And that person resides (in some shape or form) inside all of our hearts.
