Today, at IAMAI + Nokia meetup, I met many of my facebook/linkedin “buddies” for first time in real world! The best thing was that I already had seen their status messages/photo posts and lot of other information beforehand.

At one point of time, offline messaging (read: Email) was the only type of messaging. Now you have instant message, Public Wall, Scrap Book (Orkut), broadcast messaging (Status message of FB / Linkedin) and live updates (Twitter /Jaiku). Top it up with options availble to device specific options : you have SMS, USSD and even PIN messaging (Sending a message to another blackberry device without going to mail server! )
Top it all up with multimedia messaging and variations of Push and Pull. Whoa! there are so many options.

I do not think innovation in messaging is going to stop. Incidentally, always on, always-with-me devices will keep giving us reasons to evole to new messaging types and locations.

There will be many more types of messaging I can see. We should be doing Video messaging / Video broadcast to Avatar based messaging to text over IP, to cross platform messaging.

Finally I think messaging will be structured like an open RSS based application.

You will be able to read “messages” in one single message box. Your emails will be in RSS (Google already did it), your friends Facebook status message will be RSS, your twitter feeds will be in RSS and even your all other new messaging formats will be made available in RSS.

Obviously your SMS will also be available as an RSS feed from operator : -)

All the above does mean we will see a new version of RSS coming, which will take care of authentication / security and sessions aspect of it. I hope it includes the “push” aspect of it too.

So some days ( in multiple of 365 units) later we should be able to consolidate our messaging to include our various today’s and future social messaging. It should be pushed to my always-with-me device sequence based on priority and social profile of “buddies/friends”.

Aah, I can’t wait to be there.
